i mean, WOW. I'm picky with my pizza and this place blew my fucking mind last night. We started off with the arugala, goat cheese, beet, and pistachio salad (half) and the fried green tomatoes. both delicious! Our waiter was super attentive and really helpful, he let me taste different wines and was happy to offer suggestions. He told us to get the pesto, riccatta, summer squash pizza. it was so good. I cant wait to go back and try the others. I am so glad I dont live near this place, I would easily eat here twice a week.

The crust was fantastic! Gialina pizza reminded me of a place in Florence, Pugi, the crust had similar great flavor and crustiness. We tried the atomica and the sausage and broccoli rabe, they were both delicious. The large arugala salad fed four of us, but could probably feed 6. The atmosphere was casual and comfortable, and somewhat remeniscent of Dopo in Piedmont.

It is a great neighborhood spot, you are lucky if you live in Glen Park, we came all the way from Potrero and it was worth it.

Now that I live in the Castro, it's time for me to have man-dates.  My first one was to Gialina.

It was full, but we were seated at the bar right away.  I picked out the Atomica, but my "date" had already had it, so we went with the pesto-summer squash instead. Supposedly, one of the bartender's favorites, but forgive me my skepticism of everything every waiter has ever said.  Not exactly according to plan, but so far so good. The bartender, cute and with accĂ©nt, paired our vegetable-y pizza with a carafe of a light, fruity red, which is pretty much what I was thinking exactly.  Sitting at the bar was extra fun, as we got to watch all the pizzas go by and mentally note what looked good for next time.  FYI, they pretty much all look delicious.

The food was close to perfect.  The pesto, ricotta, summer squash and sundried tomatoes were, instead of being "squashed" together, each isolated in clumps, so that each bite was a little different.

$40 for two with wine?  And I got driven home afterwards?  Maybe my neighbors are on to something; women are never this easy.

I was on my way to the Asian Art Museum for MATCHA, and I stopped off in Glen Park to try Gialina before heading to the BART station towards downtown.  It was just me so I took a counter seat and had fun talking with the restaurant staff, asking questions about the menu and about the charming black and white pictures on the wall, and watching the orders come through - lots of pizzas and salads galore!

It was just me so I ordered  the Pan Roasted Chicken Breast w/ basil butter & broccoli rabe and a glass of red wine (oh I needed that wine!).  The chicken was quite tasty - easy to cut and it was balanced nicely with the broccoli rabe.  But my favorite part of the meal was dessert! - I ordered the mint chocolate chip Bi-rite ice cream and loved it!  I waddled over to the BART station as I was officially full after that!

Next time, I'm bringing my boyfriend with me so I can order a pizza (too much for one little girl - me!) as they looked yummy.  The one that caught my eye was the Summer Squash w/ sundried tomatoes, ricotta, ricotta salata & pesto.  Yes, I'm going to try that one next time! - til then, Ciao!

Simply put, the Atomica is possibly the best non-Thai, not-from-The-French-Laundry dish I've every eaten. I literally wake up some mornings with the Atomica pizza on my mind. Of course everything else at Gialina is delicious -- I've never had a less than fantastic dish there. My ONLY complaint is about the choice of wine glass, which would be perfectly appropriate were I ordering apple juice but doesn't do much for the nice and reasonably priced Italian and Californian reds they stock.

Actually, my other complaint would be the increasing difficulty of getting a table. Even on week nights, expect at least a 30 minute wait. Actually, do me a solid and just don't got to Gialina. Don't go there ever.

Mmmmm... how we love Gialina's.  My wife and I first heard about it through Michael Bauer's "Pizza Blog" in SFGate.  The funny thing was that it wasn't so much his review of the place, but rather the fact that person after person kept talking about this restaurant in the comment section of other pizzerias.

Every time we've gone we've had a fantastic time.  And we've brought a few friends too who loved it as well.

I personally love the Atomica pizza.  My wife tries to mix it up a bit.  And I always want to get the dessert pizza, but it's a bit too much for two people  and while it reheats nicely, we usually pass.

FYI, on occasional we'll call ahead as we're driving to Glen Park and they'll put our name on the list.

The BEST pizzza!!!! I wish we had a place like this closer to our home in San Mateo, but to quote my husband, "it's worth the drive."

After hearing about Gialina and reading all the great reviews, we shared two great pies and some wine. The atomica lives up to all expectations- great flavor and right amount of heat. The three cheese (with ricotta, provolone, and pecorino romano) was delicious as well. Two pungent cheeses and one creamy made a great combination. Our wine paired really well; we didn't do dessert but we'll have to try it next time.

I'm convinced that almost all the best places to eat in SF have no sign out front and Gialina fails to disappoint. Probably the best thin crust pizza in the Bay Area. The crust is so light, crisp and puffy it's almost hard to believe. The menu changes every night, so good luck trying to get the same meal twice. We started out with the soft polenta with goat cheese which I would say even beats out Pasta Pomodoro's version. We then opted for the sweet Italian sausage pie with goat cheese and leaf brocolli. The pie comes in 6 thin slices which we proceeded to devour in about 10 minutes. To finish off the evening we had the Strawberry Crisp dessert which was as good as it sounds.

With top notch thin crust and exceptional, friendly service, we will definitely be heading back there soon. Probably within a fortnight.

Yum! Pizza is similar to Pizzeria Delfina, but better I would say. We ordered the sausage and tomato which was fantastico. The pie was soggy in the center, but aside from that--great crust (which is where it has Delfina beat). I would also recommend the fried green tomato appetizer. Plan on waiting :30 or so to get a table.

Great service. I think they had a server who was partially dedicated to refilling water -- our glasses were constantly refilled. Loved it.

Pizza was fabulous. I tried two kinds: the Atomica and another one that had speck and arulaga. Both were delicious! I felt the crust was a little harder than I'd like, but no complaints otherwise. We ordered one pizza per person and it was the perfect amount of food.

Location is great. One block away from the Glen Park BART station. The restaurant does not have a large sign on the outside like its neighbors, so might be difficult to find. It's located on a corner.

Would mos def return, but wouldn't order everything again.

6 of us, at 6pm on a summer-y Saturday in SF. We waited about 20 minutes which was perfect since one of use was still BARTing over. There's a parking lot on Kern, so it was easy.

Sat down at this busy cute restaurant and the waitress took our order without writing anything down...

1 Blood Orange Soda
1 Red Wine
1 Cauliflower Salad
1 Large Frissee Salad
1 Black Cod Cake
2 Potato Pizza
1 Broccoli Rabe Pizza
1 Speck Pizza
1 Pork Belly Pizza
1 Summer Squash Pizza

I loved the appetizers. The pine nuts made the cauliflower salad and the fried egg and bacon for the frissee. can't say anything about the cod cakes since i'm allergic to fish.

In best tasting pizza order, i'd say, Potato, Pork Belly, Broccoli, Summer   Squash and Speck.

Speck was just that.. nothing else. It was missing a cheese to bring out its hammy flavor. Summer squash had too much ricotta.. maybe its because they had 2 types. Broccoli is def for broccoli lovers like myself. Pork belly reminded me of one of my fav Chinese dishes, hehhe and Potato doesn't compare to anything. Not too starchy, perfect amount of herbs.. tasty in every bite.

The pizza crust on all these pizzas were very very thin and still crispy.
As other Yelpers mentioned, they are professional water fillers. No glass at our table was dry.

thumbs up: appetizers, choice of pizzas
thumbs down: be ready to wait.

Orgasmic. Way more than pizza Orgasmica (fuck that place). FRESHLY GRATED PARMESAN. The idea of having 1 roast per week is simply ingenious. Plus the Portabello pizza and the DESSERT PIZZA are to die for. Give it try, tell me what u think.

I am lucky enough to live very close to Gialina which means I am lucky enough to have eaten there a few times.  Had the speck pizza and the potato with bacon the other night and both were so satisfying.  They really know what they are doing.  Don't be turned off if there is a wait; have a drink at the Glen Park Station and they will call or come and get you when your table is ready.

Gialina's staff was attentive and friendly.  The pizza lacked all the qualities that make a thin crust pizza stand out.  The crust was soggy.  From the menu the pies sounded delicious but the execution was dissapointing.  Bacon on a pizza seemed like a novel idea but grease from the strips of bacon left entirely in tact on top of the pie, soaked through the crust.  Pizzetta 211 and Pizzeria Picco are far more superior.

Go early if you don't want to wait. We went on a Sunday at around 5:30pm and got a table immediately, but it filled up fast. Had the atomica and the potato pizza. Both yummy. Would've liked the crust to be a little thicker but I was ok with it. Also had some endive/radish salad which was ok. Will probably try a different salad next time. Didn't have room for dessert which I'm now regretting after reading the other reviews. We didn't even look at the dessert menu.... Guess that's a good thing b/c I would've had to be wheeled outta there...

So happy that this place is in my hood and just a short walk away....

It's probably the Bay Area boy in me, but I need a little flair in my food.  "Traditional" just doesn't cut it for me.  So I was thrilled to see that Gialina takes everything that's good about traditional, Neopolitan pizza like you might find at Delfina or the other pizzerias that are currently in vogue -- blistery, crispy, chewy crusts -- and dramatically improves it with local, creative toppings.  It helps that they don't over-glop the thing with cheese, while still being a little more generous with the toppings than their Neopolitan brethren.  It's "Cal-Ital" pizza, and I love it.

We had the "atomica" and the "speck" pizzas.  The atomica was the clear winner: a spicy tomato sauce with huge mushrooms and red onions.  The speck was also good, but leaned toward the traditional: speck (like prosciutto) with arugula.  We had a beet salad too which did everything it was supposed to do, and ended the meal with a heavenly ricotta, apricot, and pistachio dessert.

Gialina rocks, and for this pizza fanatic, it enters the pantheon of great local pizza alongside Zachary's, Cheeseboard, and Pauline's (all different, equally delicious styles in their own right).

I'm not the best reviewer for thin crusted pizza, I'm a thick crust type of girl; however gialina's was pretty good.

A. and I met my parents for dinner. I've heard soo much about this place and needed to see what all the hype was about. We got there at the perfect time because about 45 minutes later there was a line outside!

We ordered :

Summer Squash w/ sundried tomatoes, ricotta, ricotta salata & pesto  - DEFINITELY my favorite. The ricotta with sundried tomatoes melted together and created a wonderful taste.. delicious.

Potato w/ applewood smoked bacon, roasted onions, sage & Taleggio - this was A. and Dad's fav.. not mine.. The onions are the best part, large pearl onions - very sweet.

Speck w/ tomato, fresh mozzarella, basil & arugula - it was just ok.. not my fav, kinda bland.

For dessert Mom and Dad ordered some type of polenta pie with whip cream... sounds bizarre but it was fantastic!

I will definitely return but won't order the same pies, they have quite a selection and the apps look nice. I hear the dessert pizza is worth the visit.

While still good, Gialina's pizza seems to have lost some of the depth of flavors I'd experienced earlier on. Also, the crust seemed to be lacking as well.

Maybe I just caught them on a down night?  Regardless, minus 1 star blatant inconsistency.

5 reasons this place gets 5 stars:

#1) Ned rocks.  If Ned is your server, he'll be extremely informative and polite.  He makes you feel comfortable as soon as he seats you.

#2) Ned sings.  Apparently, it was someone's birthday in the place, so Ned sang happy birthday.  No, not one of those off key renditions.  This was a full blown, strong-voiced, opera level rendition, vibrato and all.  Never had I heard so much applause for a singing of Happy Birthday at a restaurant, and there were probably only 20 people in the restaurant.

#3) The food is awesome.  I like pizza a lot, and this is darn good pizza.  It's the typical, thin crust Italian style pizza, with a bit of an artistic bent, but still holding true to the simple foundation of the Italian pizza.

#4) Those peppers are *hot*.  I like hot peppers, but these ones seemed to pack an extra punch.

#5) They let you taste the wine before you order it.

I actually enjoyed the salad way more than the pizza. Three of us split the large salad with arugula, apricots, goat cheese and pistachios. It had a great dressing on it which had an oniony flavor to it, possibly an infused oil? It blended so well together and was delicious! It was perfect size for three people.

We also got the speck pizza which was listed on the menu as having
Speck, tomato, mozzarella, basil & arugula on it. The arugula was tossed with a lemony dressing that really overpowered the rest of the pizza and I think they may have forgotten to put the cheese on our pizza, which none of us realized until the last piece. It was also a little lacking in the "speck" part of the pizza, which was the entire reason we ordered it. Some slices didn't even have any speck on it. I thought that was kind of lame considering there was only 6 pieces (which meant we each got 2, one with speck and one without).

The wine, however, was bomb. I know nothing about italian wines. So asked the server what she recommended. I told her I liked zinfindels. She gave me a taste of the Nero d'Avola which was very similiar to a zin and just as tasty! So I got a full glass of that. Bueno!

I thought this place was a little pricey for what we actually got. We each ended up spending about $25. So yeah, $75 for one salad, one pizza and 3 glasses of wine seems a little overpriced. I'd go back, but wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

Man, I was so pumped to go to this place! My sweet baby and I had actually made a dinner date and everything!

Taking my fellow Yelpers' advice (which i always do), we arrived early. We were seated immediately and the place is cute and charming; very bright light and simple. We decided we were on a mission for pizza so we skipped the appetizers and ordered 2 pizzas, knowing we would be taking some as leftovers (bonus!). Once again, heeding the words of the Yelp gods, we ordered the Atomica and the Potato/Bacon pizza. They were seriously just "OK". I didn't feel like the elements really came all together for me and they were both ridiculously greasy. Though the crust is very good, it is super thin in the middle where the toppings are, and huge and bubbly on the edge. It's seriously like 50% pizza, and 50% crust.  No matter how good the crust is, i don't like getting stuck with a giant chunk of crust at the end with no toppings or sauce to accompany it. I ended up just ditching it and starting a new slice.

The pizzas just didn't do it for me (though I thought they tasted better the next day). I really didn't think it was all that, and would be much happier driving across town to Giorgio's in the Richmond for pizza.

Also, word to the wise: this is for sure a neighborhood place. Lots of families with kids were coming in here, and by the time we left it was full. Now I come from a big family and love kids, but this place had a few too many screaming annoying brats even for my taste. Not exactly the place for romance.

I have to say I was disappointed, but I guess I had just trusted my Yelpers too much and overhyped it. Blast.

My friends took me to Gialina Pizzeria for the first time on December 7, 2007 -- that night, I fell in love with pizza!  Every time I would crave for pizza, I would beg my friends to take me there, until one day...

A couple of weeks ago, we went back...

No wait.  Yes!

Even on a Saturday night?

Oh well, I guess we came at the right time.

We sat down at our table.

Looked at the menu.

Ordered beers (bottled only).

Scanned the menu again.

WHAT THE.....!?!?!?

NO potato w/ apple-wood smoked bacon, rosemary & gorgonzola pizza?!?!

We started panicking.  Maybe it was a special and wasn't on the menu.  The waitress was flagged immediately and she confirmed that they no longer served the pizza we craved and wanted.  Thoughts of walking out ran through our minds, but decided to stay because our beverages have already been served.  Bummer!  On a side note, I just checked the menu online and the potato with apple-wood bacon is back on the menu... I'm confused...  I guess we should call before going to make sure they have the pizza we want.

Anyway, we ordered a pepperoni and a mushroom pizza instead.  Both very scrumptious, the crust is the best!  And for dessert, we ordered the pizza I fell in love with, Chocolate Hazelnut Pizza -- Nutella with mascarpone & amaretti.  Warm, chocolate-y, crunchy, and just plain yummy!  Mouthwatering and so delicious!

Salad, red wine and special roast of the day also available.  You'll love the pizza here, it's bursting with flavors -- party in your mouth :-)!

Meh.  I've had better pizza.  The toppings were creative and sounded delicious but the actual pie had very hard crust that was not munchable.  Also the quantity of cheese was definitely lacking.  HOWEVER the service was fantastic.  Ned was very patient and accomodating and even took our dessert ,which we told him we were dissapointed with, off the bill.  The best part of the meal was the apricot bruschetta with goat cheese and basil.

For me, Gialina and A16 are the top two pizza places in SF. I have been at Gialina's 4 times now and the consistency is incredible--consistently excellent that is. I have had 4 types of pizza there--Atomica and Speck are two I can remember. All of them were surprising in their creativity and taste. Try the deserts as well.

Yummylicious!!!  I'm debating if I prefer Gialina over Pizzeria Delfina.

Gialina's may have a bit more intense flavoring-perhaps it's their pairing of ingredients or some behind the scenes preparation of the mushrooms, speck and greens; a slightly different crust?

My favorites are any of their pizzas with greens, such as nettle or dandelion greens.  I consistently forget that their pizzas don't have red sauce which is a nice addition.

In addition to the excellent pizzas which as mentioned they don't overdress with cheese, they make the best salads with beautiful greens topped with their silky dressings.  Gialina's make it too easy for repeat visits via their easy to go option.

I like the settings, environment and the neighborhood.
Some of the wait-staff were nice and friendly, others were going charge me a tax to smile at me.

Pies crust here is decent, better than other reputable pizza spots in the SF (and no I'm not referring to Little Star, because I don't do deep dish). One of the great pizza pies in SF is at Americano - Mixed mushroom pizza.

Glaring omission from the menu was a pie with mixed mushrooms as the focus. To be sure they have a pizza with portpbello as topping. But I think portobello mushrooms are a lousy choice on a pizza crust.

Some of the other items I ordered were polenta with flat green-beans and nutty chocolate cake. They both were simple but exceptionally tasteful.

Dough needs more finesse, some fine-tuning is needed in the topping creations as well

Overall a superior choice in SF. (Not quite like Pizzeria Mozza, LA).

I will be visiting them again in near future.

It's good, but not "Soup Nazi" good. They're much better than Pizzetta 211 and similar "boutique pizzerias". That said, if you don't live in the neighborhood there's no reason to go out of your way to get pizza from these guys. They have a good crust recipe; it has a pugliese bread feel to it. It's more crunchy than chewy, and it doesn't "keep" very well if you let it sit over 20 minutes.
Good sauce, and fast take-out service. The three-cheese pizza was very garlicky and full of flavor; they definitely use high-end ingredients here. Their prices reflect that too; $16 to $19 for an 11 inch pizza, which is the only size they make. We didn't try dine-in because the neighborhood is a congested mess with the BART station across the street.
If I'm in that area again and I'm walking... I'll probably stop by.

What an awesome place. Catherine and Serdar gave us a gift certificate as a wedding gift, and sure enough, we ran into them there. I loved my cauliflower pizza and Adam's asparagus was good as well, though he wasn't crazy about the egg on top. Later we had very strong coffee and the hazelnut dessert pizza. A perfect way to end the meal.

The space is spare but difficult to maneuver around, and it would be nice if the host was situated closer to the door (though difficult as the space is so small). Acoustics can be questionable if the place is packed, as it was at six o'clock on this Sunday late afternoon. Still, that's not enough for me to knock off a star. We got away with $58 for two before tip. Pricey, but worth the splurge -- especially when we're not paying!

Definitely worth the trip down to Glen Park every once in a while. I've been here twice, and both times, the service has been fantastic, the pizza selection unique and different (we always have questions), and any of the apps/salads I tried were also tasty.

Don't be afriad of the sweet pizzas either, even if you are generally a savory food fan (like myself), they are done well.

And if there is a wait, you can leave your number and play darts at Glen Park Station next door.

I have eaten at Mario's pizzeria in NYC (Otto), and at his favorite pizzeria, which is Picco in Larkspur. Yeah I went to Pizetta211 (which I have to say is pretty fabulous). I  spent a few decades in Manhattan so I know  John's, Joe's, Arturo's etc.  What is happening at Gialina is amazing. It is my favorite pizza on this planet, and it's right here in Glen Park.   If you eat meat, and you come to Gialina for the pizza, you'll come back for the pork belly, when they have it, it is porcinfully delicious.  One more time, reads my lips:  Best Gourmet Pizza in the Bay area.

Gialina's was pretty damn good. All of the combinations tried were really good. We didn't waste any time on appetizers, just wine and pizza. It is not my favorite in sf. After reading all of the Micheal Baur reviews in the Chron, I was expecting to be blown away. Nope. It was good though. The best dessert was Bi-Rite "roasted banana"  I am about to yelp them to let them know how good that flavor is

Following Tyler W.'s review, I thought this was a good place to check out following an extended Memorial Day afternoon of eating at Ti Couz and drinking at Zeitgeist (Racer 5 especially delicious). We - being Terry C, Gene X, and me, drove down to Glen Park, and having never been here before I would almost say there is only one main street, but feel free to prove me wrong.

Gialina's was unlabeled - either that or it was Racer 5 speaking. It's not a large place, with probably 12 tables or so, but we walked in and got seated right away. The menu listed several pizzas and we chose Atomica and Dandelion Green to share between the 3 of us. There was a decent wine list, but we whiled away the time over Sierra and Peroni.

The pizzas arrived and from the first whiff and bite, they were absolutely and unequivocally delectable. I think there was truffle oil sprinkled on top, but it might as well have been liquid cocaine because we immediately started making moaning noises and gesticulating as to how good this pizza was. I think Ed to the M. was right in calling this experience "erotic". Crispy thinnish crust, fresh organic ingredients, imaginative toppings - I have to say that this was the best pizza I've ever had in SF. Couple that with a decent atmosphere and a cute Polish waitress, and you've got everything that'll bring me back to this place over and over again.

Cozy ambiance and friendly service.  We got there on Saturday around 7ish and were seated immediately.  They had a nice selection of wine/bubbly, and the pizza was great.  We shared the Atomica and Summer Squash--both were tasty, but liked the Atomica more.  An added plus is that it's so close to Bart.

There's no place like Gialina. I am moving out of Glen Park and Gialina is one of the places I will miss the most.  a The pizza is amazing, the salads are great and the atmosphere is cozy.  They change their menus all the time but the favorites like Atomica pizza are always there.

Nice little pizzeria, making pizzas with somewhat unusual, organic ingredients and slightly crispy & buttery crust.  (Too bad they don't have wood burning ovens -- I love it when the crust is a little burnt.)

Had the dandelion greens & sausage pizza, which was good, but then I smelled an extremely aromatic bacon, potato, and gorgonzola pizza, and that's what I'll have to have when I go back.

The meatballs starter is great - nice balance of herbs mixed in 2 meat mounds, topped with a light sauce for $7.

I love the pizza here - thin golden crunchy crusts and just the right amount of toppings. Definitely give the pizza Margherita ($11) a try & the Pesto pie ($14) for a (not too) salty herbal crunch-fest.

Minimal wait of about 15 minutes to be seated and EXCELLENT, attentive service. My water glass was always full, despite a packed parlor.

Finish off your visit with chocolate truffle cake ($7) for desert. It has a great texture and balance of chocolate.

So we have been here a couple of times and have had a variety of the menu to give a proper review.  First off I have never had a desert pizza in my life and Gialina delivered what I thought a desert pizza would be, awesome.

Out of all the pizzas (I have had 8 different kinds) the BEST has been Pork Belly w/ tomato, red onion, oregano & taleggio $16.  Hands down the best.

Really good pizza. We called ahead for takeout and ordered way too much for for 2 people. (we ordered 3 pizzas. We didn't finish them but we could have).
I really liked the nettles and pancetta pizza. He really liked the atomic+sausage pizza. We both liked the speck w/ arugula pizza.
the crust was thin, crisp and chewy. Great texture and really good flavor.

I thought the place was cute and would go back to eat there.
