The pies are made of a thick, dense crust which are not what I prefer for pie crusts.  I still like the age old flaky traditional pie crusts.  Sometimes the fillings can be very dry and too spicy for my liking.  The place is never crowded and there are a few tables if you prefer to dine in.  At home, I've found that the best way to warm up a pie is in the oven not the microwave which tends to make the crust soft and mushy.  One pie is enough for a light lunch meal but you might require more if you've got a big apetite.

This place is amazing, and for only about $2.85 a pie (which is a whole MEAL in itself, I swear) I can walk out with the satisfaction of knowing that I could spend that saved money on gas! Harhar.

ALWAYS ask them to warm the pies for you, because it just tastes so much better.

I've tried every pie that they have, and I love that there are vegetarian options here. My favorites would be the spinach and feta cheese and zucchini, mushroom and cheese pies. As for the dessert pies, a simple sweet potato pie won me over. The dessert pies might surprise you - for a chocolate lover like myself, the chocolate flan pie was not as decadent as, say, the blueberry pear.

Anyhoo, love this place! This might be the only time when I feel healthy eating pie.

I love Peasant Pies! They're great & healthy snacks anytime of the day. I've been coming here for awhile... and lately I've been coming here 3-4 times a week to pick up my breakfast, the Basque Beef pie... and no, I'm not tired of it yet.

I've tried almost all of their pies and my other favorites include the Spicy Clam Tomato Sauce & the Spicy Eggplant pies. The Chicken pie is also pretty good however, sometimes I find it to be a bit too dry for me.

They also have a great selection of sweet pies but since I don't have a sweet tooth, I've never tried them... they look great though!

When I'm in this neighborhood looking for a cheap, healthy lunch, Peasant Pies is my top pick.

As others mentioned, they bake a bread crust instead of puff pastry for the savory pies, so don't expect golden, crispy flakiness.  It definitely tastes healthy.  The pies are better when they warm them for you--popping them in your oven at home also works fine but it's not the same.

Thumbs up for having several vegetarian options.  I usually order the black bean and tofu pie.  Very tasty, good amount of protein, not too salty, a little sweet from their hoisin sauce.  Spicy eggplant and zucchini/mushroom/cheese are good picks too.

While I can't vouch for their desserts, their savory pies are excellent.  Much better than Hot Pockets.

This place is not memorable by any means (although I guess you could say that since I remembered going there and am writing this awhiles later it was in memory).

Peasant Pies is only one of those type of places where I get fed for cheap and I'm done...if I can't go to San Tung or Yummy Yummy which was the case on Bay to Breakers day. Packed everywhere so at last Peasant pies was completely empty...should've been "the sign".  Tried a few of them and although maybe what was inside had flavor and taste, the outside was too dense overwhelming the spices of the inside. The worker there suggested I get the chocolate pie for dessert. Huh? It's just chocolate pudding in a dense bread. Gross. No thank you. When will this restaurant see me again? That's right...when I can't go anywhere else.

Once again, I will disclaim, if you need to save $ this is the place. It's cheap. The dense outercrust will help to fill you up. You probably will need 2 pies...1/2 a dessert pie if you can find someone to share with.

A filling meal perfect for those suffering in this sparse economy.

At $2.85 each (cheaper than a gallon of gas!), these pies have quickly become my lunch and dinner (and if I load up on the Scrambled Egg pie, breakfast) staple.

My favorites? Curried potato and Moroccan lentil. And the sweet pies are equally tasty.

I wish they had more locations (or more grocery stores selling their pies.)

Before embarking on a long walk through the Park on a beautiful day, we decided to pop into this little place and finally try it out.

The pies are about four inches in diameter, maybe less, and cost just about $3 a piece with tax. We ordered two each, skeptical that we would fill up, but were surprised to find ourselves contented after the meal. Warmed first in an oven, the piping hot pies are absolutely delicious. I finished a lentil pie and a curried potato pie--both vegan, which I'm not, by the way--and will go back to try the others in the near future.

Gotta love savory pie.

After a very disappointing visit to Crossroads Trading on Irving (one more occasion in which I scored NOTHING), I decided to hit Peasant Pies for a refresher.  I needed a filler for the denimous void erupting in my soul, and they had exactly what I needed.

The smell wafting from the front door was thick with spice, coffee, and some kind of soup.  Sadly, I was too hurried to sit and enjoy a cup of anything hot but would do so for the good smells anytime!
While most of their pies are savory, the selection of fruit tarts is ample and just as pretty as their spicy counterparts.  Get the blueberry pear for yourself.  I know you deserve it!

Vegan and vegetarian offerings are really full of flavor- don't go home without trying the Black Bean & Tofu variety, even if you are a carnivore.  The Spicy Eggplant and Moroccan Lentil are also taste-bud friendly, and as you'll see boldly posted on the wall, relatively good for you.  They aren't necessarily low-calorie, but won't add too much padding to your heiny.

  Pleasant thighs.

I was doing laundry this afternoon and realized I hadn't eaten lunch.  So I walked two blocks down to try Peasant Pies, which I had heard so much about.

I ordered a Spinach and Feta pie and ordered a Vanilla flan (it just looked so good, temptation got the best of me).  I was surprised how reasonable the price was -$2.85 per pie.  Its a great, filling cheap lunch.  The pie was STUFFED with spinach, trust me, they don't skimp.  And the crust was good, maybe a tad too buttery for my likes, but it was very, very yummy.

The girl behind the counter was super sweet and gave recommendations.  Great, fast service.  I'll def go back again!

Ain't nuthin' peasant about this place!  I LOVED our strawberry rhubarb pie (seasonal) and lemon pie.  Great as dessert (or for just about any other reason)!

The cherry, banana, and chocolate was pretty good but not quite in the same league as the other two.

Bf had the zucchini, mushroom, and cheese, which he liked, but I was sticking to the sweet ones today.

I love non-fast food portable meals.

Drawn in by the nutritional fact sign on their window plus their variety of portable pies, I decided to stop in for a snack. I'm glad someone was in front of me because I had a tough time deciding what to get. I ended up trying out the Basque beef pie (beef, tomato sauce, mushrooms, onions, potatoes). Tasty stuff, especially right out of the oven.

Definitely gotta stop here again sometime soon.

SO GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!!!
i tried the cravery, hated it. so of course, i was hesitant about another little potpie shop. uhm, except for this one rocks!

please try the chicken (unless you're vegan/veg, etc). it is ridiculously good. the chicken is sweet, tender, totally not dried out, annnnnd! these pies taste healthy! well, they are pretty healthy, as you can see if you look at the nutritional facts posted on the wall. back to the chicken. it's not bathed in a creamy, fat-laden sauce. the crust isnt' flaking off due to a butter bath... it's just simply, fantastic pie.

the spinach and feta pie was pretty tasty, TONS of spinach (but my fave is still the chicken....).
tried the vanilla flan and lemon-lime pies for dessert. the lemon lime is good if you're into SUPER sour pies. but the vanilla flan.... sighhhhhhhh! it's dreamily creamy and the perfect touch of sweetness.
i left with a full and happy tummy AND wallet. my kind of meal! can't wait to try some more pies!!!!

Delicious are these pies!  i eat here quite often, and have tried every pie.  I recommend the spinach feta, black bean tofu and basque beef.  Good Gosh those are good!  For dessert, the lemon lime pie is like a lemon bar, tart and sweet but not sickly so.  The pie of the month is always a treat as well, whatever it may be.  I am sad to see the Cauliflower Blue Cheese go, but I cant wait to see what a June pie be.  Because I love em, i dont feel bad when I say that a couple of em aren't all that great.  That is not to say that they are bad, because they certainly are not bad, but why get the chicken when you can get spicy clam in tomato sauce!  And no need for the Cherry Banana Chocolate, despite its tempting title, when theres the Blueberry Pear.  Thats some fine pies they got!!

The boyfriend and I love Peasant Pies.

When we venture out to Inner Sunset for his bi-weekly haircut, desperately battling those crazy Chinese drivers who stop in the middle of Irving and Chinese pedestrians who cross the street with disregard, we always get Peasant Pies for breakfast.

We're tried almost every pie that they have and they are all delicious. Our favorites are:
Scrambled Eggs and Veggies
Basque Beef
Pie of the Month (none have failed us thus far)
Spinach and Feta Cheese

We usually order 3 pies for the both of us, and that pretty much fills us up.

We recently started tacking on the dessert pies to our breakfasts, and so far we've tried:
Pear Crumble (reallllly good. We loved it)
Southern Sweet Potato Pie (fairly good, but the pear crumble is still better)

We'll never stop going here and I don't think we'll ever get tired of this place. I even suggested to my boyfriend that I should have a party with hand-held food like pies and cupcakes, specifically from Kara's Cupcakes.

Enjoy!

I've walked by this place a million times and always brushed it off assuming it's menu would be populated by the usual flaky, buttery-crusted, beef-and-cheese-filled delicacies that I and my non-dairy lifestyle eschew. Today though, I happened to be walking on *their* side of the street and the smell drove me to investigate further. Two things compelled me to finally go in and buy a pie: 1) the big fat 100 posted in their window on the DPH scorecard. This is major for a germaphobe like me. 2) They have nutrition facts posted! How cool is that? And a chicken pie only has like 270 calories and 6 (6!!!) grams of fat. Yes. Me likey.

THEN, I read the ingredients of several of their pies and realized that no! The crust does NOT have butter in it, which means it's totally down with my gastronomically alternative lifestyle. Yay!

I ordered the chicken potato pie to share between me, my toddler and a friend. They heated it up and we headed out.

Other reviewers are not mistaken to point out that the crust is NOT flaky. It's not a buttery, orgasmic experience. Yes, it tastes healthy. But I like healthy. My toddler loved the pie and ate more than my friend and I together. The fresh dill was an awesome touch to match the potatoes and peas.

My only real complaint is that the pie was a wee bit bland. A little salt and a little more sauciness wouldn't hurt. I could probably make something better at home. But, on a cold day when you're on the go, $2.85 for a nice, hot, wholesome little pie is not too shabby.
I'll be back again for more. :-)

I had the potato curry pie for dinner and the sweet potato pie for dessert. It was gooooood! I guess the potato curry pie was a bit onion-y, but I wouldn't have noticed it if I wouldn't have read it here. Plus I like onions. The sweet potato pie was good, but not great. I kind of wish I would have gotten the blueberry one because it looked really good.
It's nice that it's healthy, but even if it wasn't, it wouldn't stop me from eating it. And I don't go there because it IS healthy. So really... it's just a perk. The price is super, for $7 I got 2 pies and a drink! They take cards and there's decent parking around the place.

This place has so much potential, yet comes up so short.  Peasant Pies serve something very unique, a tall order for an Inner Sunset eatery.  But what is Peasant Pies?  Is it a health food joint?  Is it a rustic eatery that specializes in old world cuisine?  Is it a coffee shop?  The truth is, it's none of the above.  It's a bakery in search of an identity.

The other day my girlfriend was craving pies.  4 stars looked promising, so we decided to give Peasant Pies a shot.  The pies are under $3 bucks a pop and are about three and half inches in diameter, and about an inch and a half tall.  2 pies will fill you up, three will probably stuff you.

We ate a couple there and took a few to go, including the basque beef, curry potato, ham and eggs, scrambled egg, sweet potato, pecan pumpkin, and pear crumble.

The first thing you'll notice about the savory pies is the lack of butter in the crust, so you don't end up with a flaky texture.  The beef was OK, since the pie isn't that big, and half of it is stuffed with potato, you get the sense that you're loading up on starch rather than meat.  The curry potato, on the other hand, was something like a samosa.  While it wasn't bad, it wasn't spectacular either.

I did like the egg pies.  Both the ham and egg and the scrambled egg pies were filled with ample fillings.  The scrambled egg pie was filled with tomatoes, onions, broccoli, mushrooms, and monterey jack cheese.  Both were hot and moist inside.  Two thumbs up for both.

As for the desserts, well, they're cheap!  But they won't blow your mind.  Considering how small the pies are, you don't get a lot of filling, and the crust is pretty ho hum.  Just a little sweetness or spice in the crust would really make a difference, but it just isn't there.

Curiously, Peasant Pies advertises their nutritional information on some, but not all, of their pies.  Most of them are just below 300 calories.  They also serve espresso drinks, so you can imagine, with two pies and a mocha, you can pretty much throw your diet out the window.

In the end, I was really hoping for a more dynamic eating experience.  A variety of crusts, some buttery, others crunchy, with heartier fillings would really make a difference.  Lamb.  Steak.  Bacon.  Sausage.  Those would really make for some awesome pies.

If you live in the area, or just want to try something new for a change, give Peasant Pies a shot.  So long as you don't expect much, you'll be fine.

Healthy fast food?
At affordable prices?
Could it be possible?
Or am I dreaming??

I actually bought my first Peasant Pie at Delessio's (Oak/Broderick) for $3.50, so I didn't even realize that there was a stand alone store located in the city that sold them for less (about $2.75).  The options at Delessios are pretty limited to 4 or 5 pies, but at this location they offer a wide selection of dinner pies, breakfast pies, and dessert pies.

I've tried the Moroccan Lentil, Beef Basque, and Spicy Chick Pea and they were all tasty.  I also tried the banana/chocolate/cherry pie which was yum.  I really like the fact that they toast the pies (both dinner and dessert pies) before serving them to you and I also like that they're for the most part low fat and low calorie.  Order one pie if you just want a snack but if you're hungry, I'd suggest two.

I have to say that the guy behind the counter on Sunday was a bit weird and creepy, and not to mention unhelpful in selecting a new pie to try, but fortunately he didn't take away from the experience too much.

If only this company had the distribution network of McDonalds or even a drive through option...think what a better (and skinnier) world this would be...

Much better than a "Table Talk Pie" and fully lives up to the old adage: "Cakes too dry, I like pie"
I had the Beef Basque pie and the Cherry Banana Chocolate for dessert.  I now have a new place to go out of my way for.  I wouldn't say the pies are a great deal, but they are so good I don't mind paying for them.  (They're only 2.75, I'm such a cheapskate)

I was hoping for a flakier crust.  I had the spicy eggplant and the apple/Cranberry.  The spicy eggplant wasn't too spicy.  It was okay, but if I had come in earlier with more selection I probably would have gone for another choice. Good bargain, but the crust wasn't what I anticipated.

Yummy! Sharing pies! I really liked the beef and the chicken. The potato curry was a bit too onion-y for my tatse, but if you love onions then go for it.
The chocoloate and the pumpin were amazingly delicious but the vanilla was pretty dull (it tasted like custard. no vanilla detected on these tatebuds). i'll try the fruit ones next time.
Consumption suggestion: grab some friends and get a buttload of pies, cut in half/quarters and share!

"I love Peasant Pies!"
"If you love it so much...why don't you marry it?"

.......If only... (sigh)

I have to be truthful that it was not love at first taste.  I was expecting a buttery, quiche like pie, but to my surprise the crust was wheaty and a bit dry.  I didn't know what to think.  But as I returned again and again, I came to appreciate the hearty flavors.  I rotate between the basque beef, spicy clam, and whatever is the pie of the month.  The morrocan lentil is tasty, but may be a little too cumin-y for some people's liking.

When I had food poisoning, peasant pie was the only thing I could stomach down.  Thanks Peasant Pie for saving me from malnourishment.

The shop was pleasant and cozy but the pies were a little on the dry side on the day I went. Let's say that they looked much better than they tasted. However, their pies are supposed to be healthy and the prices are pretty good for what you get. If I lived or worked in the neighborhood, I would drop by and check it out again.

I finally tried this place after living just a few blocks away for the last 2 years.

I wasn't missing much. The place is cute, clean, and the product case was sparse. I got a potato curry pie and a beef pie... both ok, the beef was kinda bland, and the curry pie was way too heavy on curry and too light on balance.

The crust is also just ok. The beef pie's crust was fine, but the potato one's crust was tough.

So my refrigerator has been broken for a long time thanks to a saga that I'd rather not go into right now. As a result, I have been eating out even more than usual, which pretty much means all of the time.

When I get sick of regular restaurant food and want something less greasy an more healthy, I head to peasant pies. Especially on cold foggy days, the wholesome versions of what Hot Pockets are very filling in a hearty sort of way.

In the mornings, I love the egg and veggie pies, and later I'll try any of their other savory pies. And since I can't resist, I normally end up with a sweet pie as well. But what makes these pies so great is that they aren't super sweet, which is how I prefer my desserts.

These little guys make a great option for a quick breakfast or snack when you're running late or just want to eat real food instead of a meal replacement "food" bar. The crusts are sometimes a little dry, but they toast up nicely in the oven. My favorite flavors are the zucchini, mushroom and cheese and the eggplant! Reasonably priced, nicely portioned out, tasty!

Fast food that's healthy, made fresh daily and delicious! When checking the nutritional info, I noticed that most of the savory hand pies are less than 300 cal each. My favorites are the spicy varieties, spicy black bean tofu and spicy eggplant black olive tomato. Their most popular is apparently spinach feta cheese. The sweet pies are a-m-a-z-i-n-g too. Yum, blueberry pear and cherry banana and chocolate!

At $2.95 for one or $2.75 each if you buy 2, these little guys are great for a quick, cheap meal. You can order them in a bigger size (9') too.

In each of these cases, the component parts are pretty good or great on their own, but average or worse combined:

-Steak (A+), Ice Cream (A+), but Steak Ice Cream (F)
-Robots (A-), Sex (A+), but Robot Sex (n/a, or F by default)
in the case of Peasant Pie:
-Peasants (A-), Pie (A+), but Peasant Pie (B)
just kidding, but:
-Delicious Pie Crust (A+), Meat Stew: (A), but Peasant Pie (B).

By all accounts, you'd think it'd be great, but these pies are only average.  Anyone know what's going on here?

My friend used to take me here all the time, back in college...

You know chicken pot pie?  The individual ones?   (okay, if you must, "hot pockets'.)   Well, imagine with different flavors-savory and sweet, and ten times better!  More fresh ingredients.

Either way, go give 'em a try.  It's fun getting about 6 of them, and having a bite of every one.  My favorite is the curry potato.

Yummy.  Nutritious.  Fast.  Only issue is I usually need two to fill up.  I almost always like the soup here.  Would also be nice if they stayed open a bit later.  Toasted they are so good.  Wish they had more locations!

I first dicovered this place several years ago when i was looking for a parking space to eat at Ebisu.
Such a cute place. Lots of vegan options and some sweet varieties too. You can also buy the savory pies at local Whole Foods.
Not a place that I'm dying to eat, but I'll still stop by occasionally when I'm in the neighborhood.

My friend came home yesterday,  and orgasmically began describing these pies. So, that meant I had to go give this place a try TODAY.... I mean I have only been going past them for years now... anywho... good job... I must say, this was fantastic, I did not feel discusting afterwards, and I am definetly coming back this weekend for the desert pies. I was in a rush so I only got one pie, a delicate flakey spinach and feta... if only I had time, and was heading home to drop them off I would have tried more. Which I intend to do this weekend. That chocolate flan one looked amazing as well as the one heeped with cherries... my mouth is watering, and I haven't even tried them

**What Jen doesn't know, is that we've secretly replaced her favorite meat filled pastries with cardboard, sawdust and glue.  Let's watch what happens!**

What a dissapointment.  So yeah, I'm the kind of "themey" girl that likes to go see Sweeney Todd and then have meat pies for dinner.  What of it?  Themes are fun.
However, themes fall flat on their fun little faces when one part of the theme takes bland to a new level.
We headed over, me hoping for a yummy messy pie, and maybe even chips and gravy!  Heck yeah!  Except no.  A few lonely cold pies available to be taken home and reheated are all that awaited me.  We got several flavors - one like Spanikopita, one with curried potatoes, a chicken pot pie version, and some basque bbq or whatnot.  The curried potato one was okay, because I like curried potatoes.  The basque whatever was the best of the bunch, only because it wasn't so overwhelming DRY.
We had to stop by Lunardi's and pick up a Marie Calendar's pot pie (no hand held meat pie, but tastier than these imposters) just for back up since we had a feeling the pies wouldn't be the good from the get go.  We were right.  I'm so sad, I was so excited.  When do you have to be here to get them fresh?  And are they even any better then?

I get this strange feeling I am in a comic strip whenever eating these pies. Sort of like Wimpy from the Popeye strip...odd.

Anyhoo, I absolutely love these pies!!! They are very tasty and their compact size makes it "Good-to-go" as the dotcom guy says in the Taco Bell commercials.

I also love how the store offers some moral responsibility to the community by posting the nutritional value of their pies in a nicely designed and easy to read poster. Here you can find the calorie, fat, cholesterol content of your food. Try finding that at your local fast food joint.

The staff are courteous and always appear helpful. The only weird thing is that they won't heat a refrigerated "to-go" pie. The clerk said it was store policy.
